Historic Fernandina
Charming Fernandina Beach-a historic Victorian-era seaport-provides ample opportunities for you to shop or dine in an eclectic array of shops and restaurants. Having been ruled under eight different flags, Fernandina Beach has always been a desirable, yet upscale place to live. Dating back to the mid-1500s, Fernandina-as Fernandina Beach was known until 1951-was originally located at what is now known as “Old Town.” Local folklore claims that pirates’ treasure from Spanish galleons is still buried there.
When Old Town was later moved to become the eastern terminus of Henry Flagler’s first railroad in Florida from Fernandina to Cedar Key, Fernandina Beach become the county seat of Nassau County. Bounded by the St. Marys and Amelia Rivers, Fernandina Beach is famously known as the birthplace of the modern shrimping industry.
Watch fishermen unload their tasty cargo as you make your way down Centre Street, a charming eight-block corridor with pedestrian-friendly street-scaping leading to the Intracoastal Waterway and the Fernandina Harbor Marina. Centre Street comprises the heart of the city’s 50-block historic center lined with quaint boutiques, art galleries, cafés and lovely late-Victorian architecture.
